10 unusual wedding dresses
12. March 2009 Art & Fashion
Currently, in the German blogosphere we read about the best wedding gown designers, the do´s and don´ts in outfit and present choices and we get to know about what to think of when planning a wedding. To make it short: German bloggers are in the wedding fever and the Two for Fashion “Wedding” Blogcarnival is responsible for it.
Time for The Zoo to join and to entertain you with the 10 most extraordinary wedding dresses. Have fun.
In the context of the YSL retrospective in San Francisco´s De Young Museum, the handknitted cocoon dress, designed by Yves Saint Laurent, raised attention again and turned heads despite it´s age of 44 years.
With this gown the deceased master of fashion design did not only quote the last centuries art of needlework, he also created a stunning metaphore for what marriage meant for woman in the sixties.
Who would have thought that the key to a sophisticated dress might rest next to the bucket?
British artist Susie MacMurray presents a prime example of wedding dress artwork made of everyday objects. For an exhibition at New York City Museum of Art & Design she created this stunning dress out of 1400 rubber gloves.
Is it a Hitchcock reminescence or a proposition for uncombed brides?
Unfortunately i wasn´t able to find more information about the who, the when and the why in relation to the dress. But anyway, i couldn´t hide this hilarious find.
Technology-overs will adore this extraordinary LED dress.
With small 300 LED lights integrated in the gown, the bride becomes a glowfly – To make this dress wireless, there are batteries hidden in the voluminous skirt.
I dare to say, that only a solar energy solution could to this.

In the year of her 50s birthday, Barbie shouldn´t be missing. e-PatternsCentral invites crocheters to support the doll´s wardrobe with a handmade wedding gown which can be downloaded here.
It´s doubtful if this dress will survive a wedding walse, but at least creator Ann Kagawa Lee made the first place in a toilet paper wedding dress contest.
This dress holds the most moving story in this chapter of extraordinary wedding gowns.
Its made out of a parachute. But not from an ordinary one, it´s the parachute that once saved pilot Claude Hensingers life, when fired of in Japan in 1945. Two years later, when he asked Ruth, his fiancee, for her hand in marriage, the major asked his wife-to-be, if she couldn´t make her dress out of this special parachute.
Desperated about how it should be possible to please her future husband, but not look like an idiot in a parachute wedding dress, Ruth asked tailoress Hilda Buck for help. Inspired by the wedding gown from the movie “Gone with the wind”, the incredible Hilda Buck sewed this one of a kind wedding dress, which is now exhibited in the National Museum of American History. What a dress. What a story.
Don´t do this at home. It´s painfulness on a grand scale.
Coming up with a bodypainted wedding outfit really requests a perfect body. If not, you will look like …this couple. In a British reality show called Battle Of The Brides three couples fought for the payment of their dream-wedding while standing awkwardly bodypainted in Covent Garden, London, for a whole day.
This is masochism at its best.
In the context of the 19th World Aids Day this wedding gown made of 12 500 condoms was exhibited in New York.
Sometimes, wedding doesn´t mean joy and love and great future. Sadly for some woman, wedding has a totally different meaning and artist Lesley Dill is aware of it. Quoting Emily Dickinson with „The soul has bandaged moments“, Dill created with her Dada Poem Wedding Dress a lugubrious artwork broaching the issues of fear and escape in connection with wedding and marriage.
Lesley Dill created this dress in 1995, today, the Dada Poem Wedding dress it exhibited at Orlando Museum of Art.

When Coco Chanel opened her first shop in 1913 in Paris, no one would have been thought that this woman would become one of the most influential designers of the 20th century, a role model for the industrially expanding world and a precursor for female independence....
Don´t worry, What´s Wrong With The Zoo isn´t going porn - instead, I have a look towards south. To Munich, Germany. In the midst of the Glockenbachviertel, the AMEN Store doesn´t only hawk unique mirroring but also cares about the good style. (read on)

Great dresses. I particularly liked the one that has little lights in it. At least after the Wedding it can be used as large lampshade rather than what my wife has done and stuck it in the attic
