Breathtaking - Anne Brenneke with “Life After Death”
30. October 2008 Art & Fashion, Weekly Darlin
In opposite to fashion capitals such as Berlin, London and Paris, Hamburg has a very small fashion horizont.
While being supersaturated by T-Shirt printers and streetwear labels, there are unfortunately precious few in town who cause heartthrobs with their works, who are couraged enough for unconventional creative output and creative enough to choose the thrilling paths in the fashion design discipline…
As remarkable is it, when a new shining star arises on that heaven.
Last Friday, young fashion designer Anne Brenneke slingshot herself with her graduate collection “Life After Death” - a series of larger-than-life quilt-portraits of past rap legends - in the pole-position.
During 18 months of handcrafting, working only with vintage materials such as T-Shirts, knit sweaters and shirts, Brenneke manufactured highly elaborated, fascinating big and colorful quilts with the likeness of Eazy-E, The Notorious B.I.G., J-Dilla and Big L.

“My graduate project should contain as much as possible of what´s important to me” explains Anne Brenneke.
The reutilization, the re-interpretation and re-definition of used clothing has been already in the focus of her work during her studies.
An article in the newspaper brought the idea of basing the project on the shawl, the most primal piece of clothing.
And when she accidentally recognized that most the songs she afflicts with memories are coming from past rap-legends, the graduate projects theme was found.

I can only find words for the facts - the excitement and astonishment I felt, by seeing and feeling the quilts for the first time is not describable.
Although I track on Anne Brenneke´s work since months and although I´ve seen photos before - I was blown away when seeing the complex and huge artwork in “real”.
From November 21st toll December 3rd, Anne Brenneke will show her series of quilts “Life after Death” in Kunstclub Berlin. Go there. You´ll enjoy.

When Coco Chanel opened her first shop in 1913 in Paris, no one would have been thought that this woman would become one of the most influential designers of the 20th century, a role model for the industrially expanding world and a precursor for female independence....
Don´t worry, What´s Wrong With The Zoo isn´t going porn - instead, I have a look towards south. To Munich, Germany. In the midst of the Glockenbachviertel, the AMEN Store doesn´t only hawk unique mirroring but also cares about the good style. (read on)
