DavidDavid or the King of patterns
18. September 2008 Designers & Labels

One moment, being Tracey Emin´s assistant, the second, running a bespoke fashion label. Päng! This is how it goes. Not in fairytales, but in real life. More precisely - in the life of British artist David Saunders.
Kaleidoscopic prints with bold colors - in the artists eyes, way too trivial to bring it on canvas. But what about bringing it on T-Shirts?
Saunders liked the idea - others too, and so, the label DavidDavid was born. And while most of the T-Shirt brands stay where they are when have reached a glimpse of fame, Saunders moved on and designed his first full collection. One for woman, one for man - with all the things a true DavidDavid fan might need: pants, shorts, jackets, dresses, shirts and sweaters. The exclusive Dover Street Market sold the line. Not for long. It was completely sold out very soon.
Reason enough to go into the second round.
I guess, the pressure was high - the fashion crowd was curious. Will the newbie David Saunders become a One-Hit-Wonder or will he last? Big question. Simple answer: YES.
Classic cuts, pushed with high quality materials and the traditional-legendary mix of pattern and color made Saunders passing his baptism of fire with flying colors. British Fashion Council just awarded him in the context of the New Generation Award to one of the 20 most talented designers of the UK and for me, David Saunders is, next to Belle Sauvage, Sibling, Cooperativedesigns, Vanessa da Silva and James Francis Millar, one of THE young designers from the UK that not only work with cright colors, but also make me reallyreally curious. If I could turn time - I would go five years ahead to get an impression of how DavidDavid and it´s patterns will develop.

Don´t worry, What´s Wrong With The Zoo isn´t going porn - instead, I have a look towards south. To Munich, Germany. In the midst of the Glockenbachviertel, the AMEN Store doesn´t only hawk unique mirroring but also cares about the good style. (read on)
