Talent to watch – Karen Segall

22. November 2009 Art & Fashion, Designers & Labels Judith
karen-segall_2karen-segall_segall_7Well, i have to admit, at first i thought it`s just another circus-inspired fashion project that lags behind those incredible and famous ones we have seen in the past seasons. I mean, even Topshop had those Harlekinesque designs and this definitely marks the end of innovation. But, as Diane Pernet wisely statet, trends doesn´t matter, it´s way more important that somebody has something to say, Karen Segall should be one to be watched. karen-sgeall4 The Danish Design School Graduate with an MA in visual communication, goes less for Photoshop than for illustration meeting fashion and interpretes the circus theme quite darker and rougher as i´ve seen it so far in fashion. How she worked and who she is can be read in the interview Spot on Textiles published some months ago.

Pleasure Principle SS10

22. November 2009 Designers & Labels, Weekly Darlin Judith
PleasurePrinciple-Womens-Looks-5PleasurePrinciple-Womens-Looks-2PleasurePrinciple-Womens-Looks-3Following Freud, our individual id´s follow the pleasure principle in seeking pleasure and avoiding pain. At least in our early lifes, when we haven´t been taught about the exigencies and obstacles of reality. Following fashion, the Pleasure Principle brings us nothing but comfort and pleasure far beyond our basic needs, with versatile garments that can be worn in multiple ways and which are restrained in construction by the parameters of the basic T-Shirt.PP-ss10-mens-looks-11PP-ss10-mens-looks-16 Founded by Adrian Cowen and Diva Pittala in 2002 with the intention to bring a conceptual artistic approach to the area of sportswear, Pleasure Principle is fashion basics at its best, combining soft bondage elements with casual, urban fashion for him and her. Superior Shoe Porn by Raphael Young

22. November 2009 Shoes & Sneakers Judith
raphael-young_extreme-shoe-design-8raphael-young_extreme-shoe-design-7raphael-young_extreme-shoe-design-2Indeed, Raphael Young`s creations are the opposite of clothing items. His artwork called shoe is beyond all characteristics of an accessories. It´s nothing that completes an outfit – it`s the outfit maker itself. And so I dare to state, that instead of “urbanising haute couture shoes” – like Raphael Young himself considers his design attitude-, he´s “couturizing urban shoes”. raphael-young_extreme-shoe-design-3raphael-young_extreme-shoe-design-6 Platform, architectural and geometric shapes as well as material-mixes have been seen multiple times in shoe design. But the way, the Seoul-born designer courageously forces up those attributes to a uber-pointed scale, is beyond prêt-a-porter, it`s shoe couture and true master class. Compared to what we´ve seen in his first collection, Raphael Young´s autumn/winter pieces push the level of shoe design out of reach for a standard fashionista but into the scale of the superior fashion. I am curious how far the designer will go with his third collection. raphael-young_extreme-shoe-design-5raphael-young_extreme-shoe-design-4

Interview with Diane Pernet

17. November 2009 Art & Fashion, Blogwatch, Fashion 2.0 Judith
diane-pernet_judith-marthalerIt`s, looking for someone who has something to say“. This came promptly and condensed. Even two weeks after I interviewed Diane Pernet for Two for Fashion, the answer on what makes fashion still amazing to her after all these years in the business, sticks in my head. I don`t want to know how many times Diane Pernet had to answer this question. But what I definitely know now is, that there`s nothing wrong with passion for fashion, a dedication for blogging and the commitment to consider fashion a meaningful part of our culture. It doesn`t mean you necessarily are a random red carpet fashion chick. While others might go for the bling and for the glam, Diane Pernet goes for content. And this attitude, combined with a clear sense for fashion and design probably makes her one of the most influential independent fashion bloggers in the world. (Read on after jump)

Patrik Budenz – Post Mortem

16. November 2009 Books & Magazines Judith
patrik-budenz_post-mortem_Some days ago, i was talking to a friend about how Patrik Budenz impressed me by visually broaching the issue of death. This friend didn`t even have a look at the photos. Instead, he gave me the feeling to be morbid while saying he doesn`t want to talk about death and no matter how interesting the photo documentation might be, he will not like it. Today, this friend mourns because a loved one died one year ago and he fears with some buddy who might have a serious disease because of unhealthy lifestyle. This all came up today. While i was able to understand the ritus of  "drinking a shot together" to remind the death friend, i didn`t understand at all the "making-the-others-pre-griefing" words by this sick friend who is pretty alive at the moment.  At least so alive that he could write pathetic emails which provoce pathetic reactions.
