Stereotype Burkha

18. January 2009 Art & Fashion Judith

As a particularly prominent feature of Islamic women, and in part a cause for their alienation in the West, artist-designer-duo Sounds.Butter aka Patrick Li and Ian Gallais tried to focus on ways of adapting their dress whilst respecting their religious codes.
In their project “Stereotype”, they created a range of Burkha’s which have been adapted to help facilitate Muslim women’s participation in certain activities where traditional dress may otherwise hinder them…

Unfortunately, “Stereotypes” isn´t an ongoing project. The adapted Burkha´s aren´t signed with a description, but as far as I can see, they are made for female Muslim runners, fighters, gymnasts and crossing guards.
I wonder how – with an artistic interpretation – the bank robber Burkha, the swimmer Burkha and festival visitor Burkha would look like :-)
