Irina Shaposhnikova – Avant-Garde Knit

29. July 2009 Knitwear Judith

The great thing about upcoming designers is that the good ones quite stir the fashion-web even without having a website or public portfolio. When KB posted a magazine scan from Russian Vogue, Jen from knit kicks did some research and BANG – Russian knit-designer Irina Shaposhnikova who studied at the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts – stood in the online-limelight.

Several Blogs and Fashion sites featured her work as a student and continued when Irina Shaposhnikova surprised again with her outstanding graduate collection “Crystallographica”. No matter if she knits or does other handicrafts, her fashion is art and her art is wearable. Don´t miss to glance at the “Crystallographica” Collection here.

Some things never change.
Like in the days we were students, earning a crust as bartenders, she is still petite and skinny and sharp. Big eyes, acute mind, calm speech and a smile that – when appearing – seems to take over the whole face.
Sabrina Seifried. For a short visit, she came from Antwerp to Hamburg and we sit with some friends in front of the Golden Pudel Club to catch some afternoon rays. While I vigorously ask questions, dandling on the bench smoking cigarettes one by one, she´s sitting quiet relaxed in front of me and reports from her assistance at Bruno Pieters, from her agitation when she dressed the models at the Raf Simons Paris show and from the past job interview at a vertical label that let two worlds collide.
And I become aware again, why I like Sabrina so much. Like then, she is unagitated but headstrong, unobtrusive, discreet and considerate without being overly-intellectual. Someone who wonders and observes without having the need to assail the people around with pieces of wisdom. Some things never change. While we are drinking our third drink, Sabrina still sips her first beer and finally comes up with some news. Together with photographer Herve Hubert, she photographed her overworked collection in Antwerp. And for the first time, Sabrina feels comfortable with the results.
And while Sabrina is back in Antwerp to go for an assistance at Veronique Branquinho, I am happy to announce that her collection is presented from 17.07. – 16.08.2008 in the Beck’s Fashion Experience Temporary Store at Konk.
Luckily, some things change. The former student became a young fashion designer that is not a dreamer but a diligent worker. Step by step, Sabrina Seifried goes her way to success and I guess, once, she will be a factor front and center.

Sabrina Seifried´s collection is presented from 17th july till 16th august at Konk store, Kleine Hamburger Straße 15, 10117 Berlin-Mitte (www.becks-fashion.de , www.konk-berlin.de)
