Piers Atkinson – Barbielicious

27. April 2009 Accessories & Jewelry Judith

Withal respect for way-out miliner Piers Atkinson and his one of a kind, ironic Barbie headwear, i am starting to get bored of the plastic dolls multiple appearances in her anniversary year.
After the fashion show, designer cooperations, Barbie art and limited editions the doll starts to suck. (more…)

Barbie-Mania at Colette

22. March 2009 Rare & Limited Judith

If there´s somethint to celebrate in the world of fashion, Colette comes up with a limited edition.
This has always been, is always happening and will probably always stay like that.
And Barbie? It´s a Topseller. This also was always like that, is currently like that and will also probably be like that.
So, it goes without saying that in the year of Barbie´s 50th birthday, Colette rounded upcoming and senior designers up to bring a limited Barbie edition among the mob. There´s the obligatory limited Barbiedoll editions as well as T-Shirts and posters. At dear prices. This is how it works.

Here a short overview of the more exceptional products of the limited Barbie edition at Colette.

I felt very well entertained by Alexis Mabille´s Barbie bows shown above. It´s humorous, simple and amusing. Unfortunately, i didn´t get this feeling with Margaux Lange´s Barbie jewelry edition.

The idea might be great, but after the third sight, there´s not more than “ugly” staying in my mind.

Paris-based design collective Andrea Crews comes along kind of barefaced. Their T-Shirts with Barbie clothes applications are sold for nearly 400€, which is more than overpriced for such a predictable idea. Don´t buy. Rather raid your childhood treasure boxes and do it the DIY-way.

10 unusual wedding dresses

12. March 2009 Art & Fashion Judith

Currently, in the German blogosphere we read about the best wedding gown designers, the do´s and don´ts in outfit and present choices and we get to know about what to think of when planning a wedding. To make it short: German bloggers are in the wedding fever and the Two for Fashion “Wedding” Blogcarnival is responsible for it.
Time for The Zoo to join and to entertain you with the 10 most extraordinary wedding dresses. Have fun.

In the context of the YSL retrospective in San Francisco´s De Young Museum, the handknitted cocoon dress, designed by Yves Saint Laurent, raised attention again and turned heads despite it´s age of 44 years.
With this gown the deceased master of fashion design did not only quote the last centuries art of needlework, he also created a stunning metaphore for what marriage meant for woman in the sixties.

Who would have thought that the key to a sophisticated dress might rest next to the bucket?
British artist Susie MacMurray presents a prime example of wedding dress artwork made of everyday objects. For an exhibition at New York City Museum of Art & Design she created this stunning dress out of 1400 rubber gloves.

Is it a Hitchcock reminescence or a proposition for uncombed brides?
Unfortunately i wasn´t able to find more information about the who, the when and the why in relation to the dress. But anyway, i couldn´t hide this hilarious find. (more…)

Kristyna Milde – Staging Barbie

1. March 2009 Art & Fashion Judith

If you thought Hitchcock Barbie was a stunner, then you might be truly amazed by Kristyna Milde´s photo series called cUMENI. The Czech artist used historical paintings as a stage, with woman represented by the Barbie doll, to allude to stereotypical forms of representing woman in the past and in the present. (more…)

Since the 60s, she´s the undisputed queen of children´s rooms, a girl´s dream par excellence and Mattel´s number one cash hit : BARBIE.
Young Swedish fashion designer Evelina Bratell focused on Barbie´s Clothing during her graduation project and created an exciting collection that is geared to materials and proportions of the doll´s wardrobe. Taken in scene by  FC UNITED Fredrik Evensen & Carl Kleiner, a wonderful dollhouse photo series crowns the graduation project.

Evelina Bratell on her work: “With fabric draped in scale 6:1, I created a collection about 1959 Barbie. In the enlargements, I have tried to stick as close as possible to the doll version in proportions and materials. The conditions are different when you make clothes in such a small format. The task is more focused on simplification, the overall effect and new solutions. Playing, reading, remembering and comparing with the experiences of others have been vital sources of incentive and inspiration to discover and see new things.”
